Pre-Hajj and During-Hajj Health Guidelines

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    Please follow the following guidelines:

    • Regularly wash and sanitize your hands.
    • Identify the nearest health center or hospital (contact the campaign management or hotel).
    • Familiarize yourself with emergency numbers.
    • Avoid spitting on the ground.
    • Avoid lying down in the streets and other public areas. Dispose of waste in a trash bin.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To prevent COVID-19, it is recommended that the developed COVID-19 vaccine be administered to all pilgrims from inside and outside the Kingdom, as well as to workers during the Hajj season and residents in the pilgrimage areas. For more information,

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    • Cover your mouth with a tissue (or with your elbow if a tissue is not available) when coughing or sneezing to limit the spread of germs and protect others. Dispose of used tissues in designated waste bins.
    • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap to remove germs and reduce the risk of respiratory infection when touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
    • If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer (it should contain at least 60% alcohol) as long as your hands are not visibly dirty or greasy. If you feel symptoms or they appear, such as fever and cough, seek medical care immediately.
    • Ensure to wear a mask in crowded places.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    • Ensure to take the seasonal flu vaccine at least 10 days before the Hajj.
    • Target Group: All those coming for Hajj, seasonal work, or any other purpose in the Hajj areas, especially pregnant women, children under the age of 5, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases (such as heart disease, respiratory diseases, kidney diseases, metabolic disorders, neurological disorders, liver diseases, or blood disorders) and individuals with immunosuppressive conditions (such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, or those undergoing chemotherapy or steroid treatment).

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    make sure to visit the nearest health facility immediately if you experience:

    • Any chest pain
    • Shortness of breath
    • Dizziness and unsteadiness
    • Excessive sweating
    • Pain that spreads from the chest to other areas such as the left arm or other areas (e.g., jaw, neck, or stomach)

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To ensure a safe and healthy Hajj for diabetic patients, please follow these guidelines:

    • Wear a wristband and carry an identification card along with a detailed medical report about your health condition and the medications you are taking.
    • Make sure to store and transport insulin in a cooling bag.
    • Follow a healthy and balanced diet.
    • Get adequate rest
    • During Hajj, wear comfortable socks to protect your feet from any ulcers, and avoid walking barefoot.
    • Do not start the Tawaf or Sa'i rituals until you have taken your medication and sufficient food to prevent low blood sugar levels.
    • Drink adequate and frequent amounts of water.
    • Temporarily stop performing rituals if you feel symptoms of low blood sugar.
    • Do not neglect to measure your blood sugar level daily and regularly, especially if you feel any imbalance in your sugar levels.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    Performing Hajj rituals requires significant physical effort, which can cause fatigue and exhaustion, especially if you are not accustomed to physical activity. Therefore, it's important to regain physical fitness before Hajj by following these guidelines:

    • Engage in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity (aerobic exercises) such as swimming or cycling.
    • If you are physically inactive, you can start with brisk walking for 30 minutes daily.
    • Gradually increase your effort by dividing your walking time into three sessions of 10 minutes each per day.
    • Start your physical activity with a warm-up period of 5-10 minutes and also include a cool-down period of 5 minutes before finishing.
    • To stay motivated and ensure consistency, track your daily performance, such as counting steps using a dedicated app.
    • If you have a chronic medical condition, consult your doctor about the type and amount of physical activity suitable for your condition.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To ensure a safe and healthy Hajj for those with high blood pressure, please follow these guidelines:

    • Regularly monitor your blood pressure.
    • Ensure you take your prescribed medications throughout the Hajj journey.
    • Eat meals with low salt content.
    • Avoid excessive consumption of tea or coffee.
    • Avoid fast food and canned foods as they can cause high blood pressure.
    • Avoid stress, anxiety, or excitement, especially when feeling fatigued, as they negatively affect blood pressure.
    • Drink an adequate amount of water.
    • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight as much as possible and use a protective umbrella.
    • Get enough rest.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    • Your health is a trust; do not risk it by smoking.
    • Smoking is prohibited in all public places to preserve everyone's health.
    • Return from Hajj better than you were; return without smoking.
    • Seek Allah's help to quit smoking, and let your Hajj be the start of a new healthy life.
    • Electronic and traditional cigarettes can cause fires and explosions that may lead to serious accidents.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To ensure a safe and healthy Hajj, please follow these guidelines:

    • To conserve energy and avoid fatigue, ensure you eat your daily meals regularly.
    • To avoid food allergies, refrain from consuming unfamiliar foods.
    • Ensure you have a balanced meal that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats.
    • Minimize consumption of sugary drinks and avoid foods rich in fats and sugars.
    • Avoid foods high in salt such as fast food, canned foods, and instant noodles.
    • Limit consumption of caffeinated beverages such as tea and coffee.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    Heatstroke is a medical emergency that must be addressed promptly. Here's what you should do:

    • Stay with the affected person and seek emergency medical care immediately.
    • Move the affected person to a cool place and remove outer clothing.
    • Cool the body with cold water and apply cold compresses, especially to the head, neck, and armpits.
    • Circulate air around the affected person to speed up cooling using a fan or air conditioner.
    • Transfer the affected person to the nearest healthcare facility immediately.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To avoid heat stress, follow these tips:

    • Avoid exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight as much as possible.
    • Ensure to drink fluids regularly and do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink.
    • Avoid beverages containing added sugars and caffeine as they can lead to further loss of body fluids.
    • Avoid extremely cold drinks as they can cause stomach cramps.
    • Wear light-colored clothing (for women).
    • Use light-colored umbrellas.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    To prevent food poisoning, follow these guidelines:

    • Check the expiration dates of foods and beverages.
    • Clean utensils for food preparation and consumption.
    • Store food in the refrigerator, or prepare only enough for one meal.
    • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consuming.
    • Avoid consuming unpasteurized milk and its products, and undercooked meats.
    • Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat foods.
    • Avoid storing cooked food for long periods while traveling.
    • Do not leave food uncovered and exposed to contamination and insects.
    • Dispose of food if there are doubts about its safety regarding changes in taste, color, smell, or texture.
    • Wash hands with soap and water before preparing food and before and after eating.
    • Store food at safe temperatures.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    Ensure to follow medication usage guidelines:

    • Check the expiration dates of medications.
    • Take medications regularly and on schedule.
    • Store medications at an appropriate temperature and choose a suitable location away from direct sunlight exposure.
    • Wear a medical identification bracelet and carry a detailed medical report about your health condition and the medications you are taking.
    • Do not hesitate to visit healthcare facilities if you experience any health issues.
    • Familiarize yourself with the nearest health center or hospital.

    Dear Hajj Pilgrim,

    Please ensure to follow the following guidelines:

    • Wear a mask and avoid close contact with anyone showing respiratory symptoms.
    • When coughing or sneezing, use tissues to cover your mouth and nose, or use your elbow if tissues are not available.
    • Wear clean clothes to avoid skin irritations.
    • Clean your accommodation daily.
    • Maintain oral hygiene by brushing your teeth regularly.
    • Wash your hands:
      • Before, during, and after preparing food.
      • After coughing or sneezing
      • After using the restroom
      • Upon arrival at your accommodation.
      • After touching garbage.
